The Franklin fire is burning so hot that it has modified the local winds, bending them toward and into the fire overnight, forecasters out of the National Weather Service in Los Angeles said on Tuesday morning, as they warned that the wind conditions that helped fuel it are expected to continue through much of the day.
Strong Santa Ana winds moved into the area on Monday, prompting forecasters to warn of a “particularly dangerous situation” in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, similar to circumstances in early November that helped fuel the nearby Mountain fire. Those conditions are expected to continue through early Tuesday afternoon before easing through the evening.
Smoke forecast Light Medium HeavyTodd Hall, a meteorologist with the Los Angeles National Weather Service office in Oxnard, Calif., said one round of winds peaked late Monday night when the fire started, and he was expecting a second peak on Tuesday morning.
“We’re looking at winds gusting back to 45 m.p.h. to 60 m.p.h.,” Mr. Hall said early Tuesday morning local time. “We’ll see winds increase over the next three hours. They should drop off around 10 a.m.”
The wind speeds in this region can vary vastly because of the complex terrain of mountains, canyons and coastline. The strongest gust recorded over the blaze so far was 52 m.p.h., he said.
The air over the region is bone dry and the relative humidity level dropped to 5 percent Monday nightmonkaji, Mr. Hall said.
